Dice rolls and skill checks

Sometimes your story is decided by the fates; sometimes your story is written in the stars; and sometimes your story turns on the roll of a die...

The @roll system is a fairly simple tabletop d20-style die roll system that has been provided for optional use by players in roleplaying scenes, but may on occasion be used during Story Staff-run plots or scenes. The system is designed to be quick and easy in usage with minimal time or effort required on the part of the player to use it and move forward with your stories.

Basic rolls

At base, @roll is a standard d20 die roll intended to be used tabletop style whenever players are engaged in a scene whereby some form of RNG roll might help determine the outcome of scene.

Use of @roll to decide such an outcome is optional and should be agreed to by participating players and, if desired, a different range of numbers from 2 to 100 can be chosen as the die range.

  • @roll
Generate a random roll from 1 to 20
  • @roll '50
Generate a random roll from 1 to 50
  • @roll 'X
Generate a random roll from 1 to X

Modified rolls

The @roll command can additionally accept modifiers, and this is where its use starts becoming more complex.

Characters have inherent values of strength, agility and mind based on their physical build and stature chosen at character generation. All builds have the same sum value of 'stat points' spread across the three traits, but the spread of them varies by build; larger, bulkier builds yield higher strength values, while lean or agile builds yield dexterity, and builds that fall under neither of those yield higher mind.

These core stats are static, designed with the intention that a muscular character has an advantage in an arm wrestle, a lithe character in a foot race, and so on. As such, these stats will generally never change or 'level up' outside of perhaps some rare and special circumstances. When using @roll, you may manually attach your stats to your random roll as a modifier. Want to determine who wins an arm wrestle? Both characters can @roll 'strength and find out.

  • @roll 'mind
Generate a random roll from 1 to 20, added to your character's mind stat
  • @roll 'strength agility
Generate a random roll from 1 to 20, added to your character's strength stat and their agility stat

In addition to the base rollstat stats which cannot be altered, there are also rollstat skills which can. These skills, which can be learned and leveled, each tie to one of the three base stats and are further modified by it. Like base stats, these skills can be attached to an @roll. Wish to determine whether a criminal outruns the Watch? Both characters can perform an @roll 'athletics to determine the outcome -- the system will grant each player a random d20 roll modified by both their athletics skill and their dexterity stat to determine the outcome.

  • @roll 'stealth
Generate a random roll from 1 to 20, added to your character's stealth skill

Special plot and interaction uses

The @roll functionality can be used for more than random rolls with other players, but can also be used as a means of interacting with certain objects in the game world, in particular during plots. These objects should be fairly obvious when you come across them, and using the @roll command when targeting these objects will allow you to use one of your @roll stats to perform a difficulty check roll against that object for a desired outcome. For example, crossing a narrow beam over a chasm might require an acrobatics skill check, with a coded result to follow in either case whether you fail or pass the roll.

  • @roll [target] 'perceiving
Roll your perception skill vs the targeted object and see what happens
